SPRINGFIELD, Mass., Feb. 5 (UPI) -- Massachusetts police said a shoplifting suspect could not fit into the back of a police cruiser due to 75 bottles of lotion shoved down his pants.
Sgt. John M. Delaney, aide to Springfield Police Commissioner William Fitchet, said Eastfield Mall security guards quickly chased down and detained Chamil Guadarrama after he was spotted allegedly taking items Wednesday from Bath & Body Works, The (Springfield) Republican reported Friday.
Delaney said police arrived and discovered Guadarrama's slow fleeing was the result of 75, 8-ounce glass bottles of lotion in his pants, which were tied at his ankles to prevent the merchandise from spilling out. The bottles of lotion were worth $787.50.
"They could not fit Mr. Guadarrama into the cruiser because his pants were bursting at the seams and he could not bend over," Delaney said.
Guadarrama was arrested and charged with shoplifting. He was released on his own recognizance after pleading not guilty Thursday and is due back in court in March.
