LITCHFIELD PARK, Ariz., Feb. 3 (UPI) -- An Arizona elementary school principal placed on leave for writing a letter jokingly calling children "stupid" has apologized to parents, officials said.
Administrators said Principal Ron Sterr of Litchfield Elementary School in Litchfield Park distributed the letter to teachers as a joke last week but one teacher did not recognize the humorous intent and sent the message home to the parents of her second-graders, KSAZ-TV, Phoenix, reported Wednesday.
"The math we do is really easy. If your child is either too lazy or too stupid to finish it in class, I'm sending it home so that you can work with them and judge for yourself whether it is laziness or idiocy that inhibits your child's progress," part of the letter read.
District officials said Sterr was placed on administrative leave after numerous parents complained. Further disciplinary action is pending, officials said.
"The principal has called each parent individually to render an apology and take responsibility," Litchfield Elementary School said in a statement.
