GDYNIA, Poland, Jan. 29 (UPI) -- Crew members of a Polish research ship said they intend to adopt a dog they rescued from an ice floe off the northern coast of the country.

The crew of the Baltica research boat initially believed the animal they've now nicknamed "Baltic," on the ice floe off the coast of Gdynia was a seal, but they soon discovered it was a dog that had drifted down the Vistula River and nearly 15 miles out into the Baltic Sea, Polish Radio reported Friday.

"The crew of the boat are real hard-bitten sea veterans, but the dog managed to melt their hearts," said Ewa Baradziej-Krzyzankowska of the Sea Fisheries Institute in Gdynia.

"The dog will become a crew member. If he managed to survive on an ice floe for so long, it means he is a real sea wolf."

Euronews reported on its Web site several people have come forward to claim the dog, but so far the crew says Baltic has not shown signs of recognizing them.
