Survey: British workers fib to stay home

LONDON, Jan. 25 (UPI) -- British workers called in sick this month with excuses including missing false teeth and shoe-stealing bus drivers.

Cable TV network Viva said its survey of 5,000 British workers found one in seven respondents have called in sick since New Year's Day, with many of them admitting their excuses were concocted because they simply didn't feel like going in to work.

The excuses included employee claims of being locked in an enclosed porch, trying to fix a sink that wouldn't drain, misplaced false teeth and one claim of a bus driver stealing a worker's shoe.

"We're all guilty of pulling the odd sickie using tried and tested excuses of food poisoning, migraines and sore throats when all we really want is a lie in and a lazy day," a Viva spokesman said. "We were pretty shocked at some of the lengths some people go to in order to skip work for the day."

Viva said the survey was conducted as part of its "Up Your Sickie" campaign, which encourages workers to stay home and watch the network's programming.
