WASHINGTON, Jan. 8 (UPI) -- Officials at the National Zoo in Washington said Tai Shan the panda will receive a public farewell party this month before heading to China.
Zoo spokeswoman Pamela Baker-Masson said the event, organized by the Friends of the National Zoo, will take place at the facility Jan. 30 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., to allow zoo visitors to say goodbye to the 4-year-old giant panda with experts on hand to answer any questions about the creature, The Washington Post reported Friday.
The Chinese government, which owns all giant pandas in U.S. zoos, was originally scheduled to take custody of Tai Shan on the animal's second birthday but an extension was granted for two extra years.
