NEW YORK, Dec. 31 (UPI) -- A New York woman whose marriage plans were foiled by a con artist who married in her name said she was granted a divorce from the stranger.
Sarah Benitez, 44, said a judge dissolved her marriage to a man she had never met after Aracelis Cherico, 46, pleaded guilty to felony identity theft, the New York Daily News reported Thursday.
Authorities said Cherico used Benitez's name to claim her children as dependents for the tax break. She also got married, took out a passport and incurred debt in the other woman's name.
"It was a nightmare. In the beginning, I used to cry," Benitez said. "How can people just ruin other people's lives?"
Cherico was sentenced to 60 days in jail and ordered to pay back $3,331 in fraudulent tax refunds.
"Hopefully now I will set a wedding date," Benitez said. "My kids are all waiting for me to get married."
