WELLINGTON, New Zealand, Dec. 28 (UPI) -- Organizers of the Unicycle World Championships, which opened Monday in New Zealand, said 640 one-wheeled wonders from around the world registered for the event.
Arthur Klap, coordinator of the competition in Wellington, said 100 New Zealand unicyclists were among the hundreds from 23 different countries parading along the city's waterfront at the opening of the 10-day event Monday, The (Wellington) Dominion Post reported Monday.
Officials said events at the 15th biennial Unicycle World Championships, which is being held in New Zealand for the first time, include unicycle hockey, basketball, cross country and "artistic" unicycle competitions.
John Foss, a member of the U.S. Team America, said the event kicked off Monday with a powhiri, a traditional Maori welcoming ceremony that commonly includes speeches, singing and dancing.
