Delaware County sheriff's deputies said the Selma Elementary School student took the money from a safe at the home where he lives with his custodial grandparents and handed out a little more than $300 to classmates on the bus ride to school before teachers confiscated the cash, the Muncie (Ind.) Star-Press reported Wednesday.

"I doubt any of our administrators have experienced this before," Principal Joel Mahaffey said. He declined to comment further on the incident.

Deputies said the boy was sent home with his grandmother. They said the money, which was in the sheriff's department's custody, would likely be returned to the family Monday.

Authorities seek bank robbing Santa

HERMITAGE, Tenn., Dec. 23 (UPI) -- Tennessee police said they are searching for a Santa Claus who made their naughty list with a morning bank robbery.

Investigators said naughty old St. Nick, described as a white man with brown hair, walked into the SunTrust Bank Tuesday in Hermitage and left with an undisclosed amount of money in his Santa sack, The (Nashville) Tennessean reported Wednesday.

Police spokeswoman Kristin Mumford said the robber was the first to don a Santa suit in a Davidson County crime in recent years.

"I don't remember a Santa doing that," Mumford said. "I don't recall when a costume like he had today was used for a robbery."

However, the costume is a popular disguise among criminals nationwide. Police in Pennsylvania said a gun-toting Santa robbed a bank earlier this month. One of the most infamous heists in history, the Dec. 23, 1927, Santa Claus bank robbery in Cisco, Texas, resulted in the deaths of six bystanders.

Cross-country Chihuahua flight delayed

SAN FRANCISCO, Dec. 23 (UPI) -- Airline Virgin America said it has postponed plans to fly a group of Chihuahuas in need of homes from San Francisco to New York until next year.

The carrier said Tuesday the plans to transport about a dozen Chihuahuas was put on the back burner to make room for more human passengers as snowstorms on the East Coast have left many travelers stranded, the San Francisco Chronicle reported Wednesday.

Officials at San Francisco animal shelters said Chihuahuas, which are in demand in many parts of the country, are common in California shelters, as owners in the state often buy them thinking they will not require as much care as a larger pet and later return them.

A Virgin spokeswoman said the company will attempt to find room for as many as 15 dogs on a January flight.

Woman wants her pink hippo back

EL DORADO HILLS, Calif., Dec. 23 (UPI) -- A California woman is imploring thieves to return of a 300-pound fiberglass hippopotamus taken from her yard.

Lynn McCarty said Henrietta the Giant Pink Hippo, which formerly graced her El Dorado Hills yard, was last seen two weeks ago in the bed of a white Ford truck speeding away from her home, Sacramento's KOVR-TV reported Wednesday.

"Her hind end was underneath the tree and she covered this whole area," McCarty said. "They had this very well planned. They must've come with a team of people."

McCarty said she suspects neighborhood teenagers of arranging the theft as a prank.

"It's not fair, it's not right, they need to bring her back," she said.
