SEMINOLE, Fla., Dec. 23 (UPI) -- John "Jack" Essenburg of Holland, Mich., said he and his wife, Ella, reached their 76th wedding anniversary thanks to two words: "Yes, dear."
The St. Petersburg (Fla.) Times said Essenburg and his wife marked their anniversary Tuesday while in Seminole, Fla., where they have spent each winter since 1978.
Essenburg, 97, said he and his 96-year-old wife have settled into regular routines after so many years together. The couple has also persevered despite health problems, he added.
"We've been real fortunate,'' Essenburg said.
Getting older has cost the couple a hobby or two: Essenburg no longer is allowed to go on his annual deer hunting trips back in Michigan.
"He was going to go deer hunting in Michigan last year, but my mother said, 'You're not going deer hunting.' I say the woman has to be a saint. I really do. Dad was always hunting and fishing with the boys," daughter Betty Hamlin said.
The Times said in addition to five children, the couple's family now includes 17 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.
