LONDON, Dec. 18 (UPI) -- Police in London released images of 10 alleged "hugger muggers" targeting Christmas shoppers and party-goers in the Westminster area.
Investigators said the "hugger muggers," named after the oft-used tactic of pick-pocketing during a hug, are suspected in a number of offenses in recent days, including a number of thefts involving hugging and other distractions, Sky News reported Friday.
"We believe that these suspects have traveled to Westminster from all parts of London using public transport to commit these robberies, which is why we need the help of people from all areas of London to track them down," Detective Inspector Sean Oxley said. "We are working hard throughout the Christmas period with more officers out on the street to make sure that anyone coming into the West End to shop and socialize can do so safely."
"However, it is always important to be aware of your surroundings when you are in a busy area and to keep an eye on your belongings," he said.
