SAN RAFAEL, Calif., Dec. 10 (UPI) -- Police investigating a report of gunfire at a California college discovered a Nutcracker statue reported stolen from the cafeteria.

The 3-foot statue was not hit by gunfire, the Marin Independent Journal reported. It was leaning against a tree that was hit by many bullets on the Dominican University campus in San Rafael in the San Francisco Bay area.

Police came to the campus early Wednesday after people reported hearing gunshots at about 12:30 a.m. Searching the area with security guards, police found first shell casings and then the Nutcracker, which was in a fenced-off sitting area.

The statue of the Nutcracker, hero of the popular Tchaikovsky ballet, had been reported stolen from a holiday display in the cafeteria on Saturday.

Security on the campus was stepped up Wednesday. This is the final week before the Christmas break.
