CAMBRIDGE, Mass., Dec. 6 (UPI) -- A team of college students from Massachusetts won $40,000 for finding 10 military weather balloons scattered across the United States, officials said.
The Massachusetts Institute of Technology students were the winners Saturday of the high-tech scavenger hunt sponsored by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, the U.S. military's research arm.
The hunt, which used social networking and other Web-based techniques, was designed, in part, to give the military insight on how to operate in situations ranging from natural disasters to combat, CNN reported Sunday.
The MIT team located the 8-foot-wide red balloons in less than nine hours, said agency spokeswoman Johanna Jones, who did not elaborate on how many teams were involved or where the balloons were located.
MIT's Web site invited people to help find the balloons, noting volunteers who sent in correct coordinates would receive a share of the prize money.
