NEW YORK, Nov. 16 (UPI) -- A U.S. software developer said it has created an iPhone application inspired by the hoax story of a Colorado boy trapped in a balloon.

Mosa Motion Graphics LLC said its "Balloon Boys" application, based on the actions of Colorado parents Richard and Mayumi Heene, allows users to merge photos from their iPhones with a selection of balloon pictures, CBS News reported Monday.

The Heenes reported Oct. 15 that their son, Hunter, may have been inside of a runaway homemade balloon. The balloon landed 50 miles from their Colorado home with no child inside and the Heenes later reported their son had been found hiding at home. However, authorities grew suspicious of the story and accused the pair of fabricating the story to promote a reality TV show pitch.

The Heenes pleaded guilty to false reporting to authorities and attempting to influence a public servant.

"People are bombarded with the bizarre, yet all too real stories of our time," said Kari Adams of Mosa Motion Graphics, in the press release. "Being able to participate in the growing legend of the Balloon Boy, is like immersing yourself into an event sure to become an instant classic American folk-tale."
