Police: Man called 911 for sex

TAMPA, Fla., Nov. 16 (UPI) -- Police in Florida said they arrested a man who called 911 five times to report he wanted someone to have sex with him.

Tampa police said Basso made the calls Wednesday and operators hung up on him each time, the St. Petersburg (Fla.) Times reported.

Basso, who was arrested 15 minutes after his last 911 call, told officers he called 911 because it was the only number he knew that was free while his cell phone was out of minutes.

He was charged with making a false 911 call and taken to Hillsborough County Jail.

Police: Woman mistook officer for carhop

ELIZABETHTON, Tenn., Nov. 16 (UPI) -- Police in Tennessee said a woman arrested on a charge of driving under the influence apparently mistook an officer for a server at a Sonic Drive-In.

Investigators said a 911 caller Saturday reported a woman slumped over a steering wheel was driving out of Ingle's Market in Elizabethton and nearly striking several vehicles, the Johnson City (Tenn.) Press reported.

An officer approached the car after it pulled into a parking space at the nearby Sonic Drive-In and found the driver asleep, police said. The woman woke up and attempted to hand the officer a $20 bill and continued to attempt to hand over the money despite the officer's protests that she was not a Sonic employee.

The officer said the woman did not seem to realize she was being addressed by a police officer.

The officer arrested the woman and discovered a used syringe, a spoon with white powdery residue and numerous bottles of prescription medicine in the car, police said.

Veletta Cuba Newman, 31, was charged with second offense driving under the influence and one count of possession of drug paraphernalia. She was jailed on $1,000 bond.

Deer breaks $500 meat store window

BARTONVILLE, Ill., Nov. 16 (UPI) -- Police in Illinois said surveillance video recorded a deer breaking a meat shop's $500 plate glass window.

Bartonville Police Chief Brian Fengel said no one was injured Thursday morning when the deer shattered the window of Echo Valley Meats and ran off, the Peoria (Ill.) Journal reported.

"I know it's rut season for deer," Fengel said. "We've had a lot of deer accidents and a lot of deer running around."

Dave Alwan, owner of Echo Valley Meats, said deer meat is among the products processed at his store.

"We're so good, they're just dying to get in," Alwan said.

Web site: Swedish men best looking

STOCKHOLM, Sweden, Nov. 16 (UPI) -- A dating Web site that claims to filter out "unattractive people" says its registration numbers suggest Swedish men are the world's best looking.

BeautifulPeople.com, which allows existing members to choose which applicants are good looking enough to join, said 65 percent of applications from Swedish men are accepted, compared with only 9 percent of Russian and Polish men, The Local reported.

The Web site, which tells members they won't be "filtering through unattractive people" in searches, said 45 percent of Brazilian men who apply to the site are accepted while 40 percent of Danish men are welcomed.

About 2 million people have been rejected by the site since it went online in 2002.

"It might sound morally wrong to our critics but our growing success is the beautiful truth," said Greg Hodge, the site's managing director.
