MIA Australian dog found in Afghanistan

TARIN KOWT, Afghanistan, Nov. 12 (UPI) -- Australian officials said a special forces dog that went missing in action in Afghanistan has been found alive and well more than a year later.

The Australian Department of Defense said Sabi, an explosives detection dog that went missing in September 2008, was found by a U.S. soldier in the southern province of Oruzgan, CNN reported Thursday.

The soldier found the dog recognized commands and remembered his Australian colleagues were missing an explosives detection dog. The 4-year-old black Labrador's identity was confirmed by Australian soldiers and she was transported to the Australian base in Tarin Kowt to be reunited with one of her trainers.

Sabi went missing in September 2008 following an insurgent ambush on a combined Australian, U.S. and Afghan army convoy. The dog's handler was one of nine Australian soldiers wounded in the attack.
