A designated driver on demand

KANSAS CITY, Mo., Oct. 25 (UPI) -- A Kansas City company offers drunks a legal way to get home in their own cars by providing designated drivers with fold-up scooters.

Jeff Seabaugh, one of the owners of Scootercrew, told KCTV he got the idea from a similar service in London.

Seabaugh's company charges $10 per trip plus $3 per mile, more than a taxi. But he said people are willing to pay for the convenience of not having to pick up a car.

"We have folks using the service and enjoying it," Seabaugh said. "Folks are happy to wake up the next morning with a headache and their car."

Not all of Scootercrew's customers are merrymakers. Seabaugh said the company also gets calls from people who have had outpatient medical treatment and are unable to drive themselves home.

The company's next step is expanding to wedding receptions and other large functions where a lot of designated drivers may be needed.
