HONEOYE FALLS, N.Y., Sept. 28 (UPI) -- An upstate New York farmer said a recently deceased chicken left behind an impressive legacy -- an egg weighing 138 grams, almost 5 ounces.

Chris Schauerman of Honeoye Falls said he noticed one of his chickens appeared ill one day last week and died later that night after laying the massive object, which is 2 1/2 times the size of an average egg, CNN reported Monday.

"I just couldn't believe it," Schauerman said. "You open up the chicken coop, and sitting inside the nest with five other eggs is just this behemoth."

"We kind of related it to a woman having a 25-pound baby, if you do the math," Schauerman said. "I'm pretty sure that's what eventually led to the death of the chicken."

Schauerman said he is loaning the egg to a teacher friend for show-and-tell with schoolchildren before it goes on to fulfill its final purpose.

"I'm gonna make an omelet. Maybe a little ham. Delicious!" Schauerman said.
