NEW YORK, Sept. 8 (UPI) -- Authorities in New York said they entered a smelly apartment expecting to find a deceased resident but instead discovered the man living in a mess.

Police said they noticed a stench coming from a Ravenwood Houses apartment in the city's Queens borough early Monday while investigating a domestic dispute at a neighboring home, the New York Daily News reported Tuesday.

A New York Fire Department hazmat team was summoned after officers noticed garbage piled top to bottom against the window and front door of the apartment. Officers said they expected to discover a dead body inside the residence, but the hazmat team discovered Ming Li Sung, 69, living in the apartment and yelling for the authorities to leave.

Sung, who does not face any charges, was taken to the Elmhurst Hospital Center for psychiatric evaluation.
