GRAND MARAIS, Minn., Sept. 8 (UPI) -- Officials in Grand Marais, Minn., said they were offering a free vacation in the city for the return of a fake seagull perched on its billboard in Pine County.

The Grand Marais Area Tourism Association said its "Give Us the Bird" campaign is offering the vacation in exchange for the return of the fake gull, which had been perched on a billboard along Interstate 35, the Duluth (Minn.) News Tribune reported Tuesday.

"He was perched there, welcoming people north. And now it's just this little tangled yellow feet -- so we're pretty sure he didn't just up and fly away," the association said.

Diane Brostrom, director of the tourism association, said officials are serious want the bird returned to its former home.

"Aside from what he might do to your car, this bird's nothing but friendly -- he's the symbol of Grand Marais, and we want him back," she said in a statement. "We're really broken up about this."
