Fla. brothers break trans-ocean record

TAMPA, Fla., Sept. 7 (UPI) -- Two Florida brothers set a record for a trans-Atlantic journey in a 21-foot fishing boat, the smallest powerboat to make the trip, they reported on their blog.

Ralph Brown, 50 of Spring Hill and Robert Brown, 52, of Merritt Island left Tampa, Fla., June 27 and arrived in London Friday, they said on their Web site, www.crosstheatlantic.com.

"It is exciting that we are actually here." Ralph Brown told the St. Petersburg (Fla.) Times in a telephone interview. "By the way, it is a beautiful place."

The trip of almost 7,000 miles also set a record for longest ocean journey in a flats boat and for being the first flats boat to make it across the Atlantic Ocean, the Times reported Sunday.

The brothers made the trip in a boat designed by Ralph Brown, who owns Dream Boats in Hudson, Fla. In Greenland, they collided with an iceberg, slammed into rocks and almost ran out of fuel and money.

The brothers set a Guinness record in 2007 for a 1,400 mile journey in a similar boat from Atlantic Beach, N.C., to Bermuda to New York Harbor, the newspaper said.

The current trip was conducted to honor three of Ralph Brown's fellow U.S. Marine, who died in 1980 in a failed attempt to rescue American hostages from Iran. The brothers said they are trying to raise $3 million for charities benefiting wounded heroes.

The two sailors will travel to Landstuhl Regional Medical Center, Germany, after their London stop.

Jeep crashes through home's second floor

BROOKHAVEN, N.Y., Sept. 7 (UPI) -- Police in Suffolk County, N.Y., say an alleged drunken driver crashed a Jeep into the second story of a house and the Jeep ended up on the first floor.

Suffolk police Sgt. Robert Lehmann said Adam Clark, 20, of East Moriches, N.Y., was allegedly intoxicated when he went off the road, hit a pile of dirt and went airborne toward early Saturday morning, Newsday reported.

The vehicle crashed into the home's second floor and then broke through into the first floor of the house.

Police said Clark and his passenger, Richard Mailand, 20, received minor injuries in the crash, while no one inside the home was hurt.

Clark allegedly failed multiple sobriety tests after the accident and police obtained a blood sample to determine his blood alcohol level, which was not reported.

Homeowner, John Sarli, 58 -- who was asleep in a first floor den at the time of the crash -- told Newsday several family heirlooms and antiques ere destroyed.

"I heard a bad crash and smelled dirt," he said. "And lo and behold there's a Jeep crashed into the second floor of my house."

Python finds home in man's toilet

DARWIN, Australia, Sept. 7 (UPI) -- A 10-foot python wrested from the plumbing of a toilet was harmless but had sharp teeth and an attitude, a snake wrangler near Darwin, Australia, said.

"So if you felt something bite you on the bottom while you were on the toilet it would give you a hell of a fright," said Craig Peberdy, a reptile expert who caught the snake and relocated it in the wild.

Peberdy was called to the home of Erik Rantzau after the python developed a routine of slithering in from the garden and curling up in the toilet bowl, The Sunday Times of London reported.

"I've seen it on and off around the property for the last 10 years, but never in the dunny," said Rantzau, who lives in a rain forest.

Rantzau said he didn't mind if the snake he named Axl occasionally glided through the room while he was watching TV, but taking up residence in the toilet was another story.

"You think you might find a spider or a green tree frog in your dunny, but not a snake," Rantzau said.

Half jewel heist take stolen from thieves?

LONDON, Sept. 7 (UPI) -- One of the men involved in the biggest jewelry robbery in British history has taken off with half the haul, gang sources say.

The Mirror, citing sources in the London underworld, reports the fugitive, nicknamed "Tim Slim but Dim," has to stay clear of the police and the man who organized the holdup at Graff Diamonds in fashionable Mayfair. He was described as a 52-year-old with ties to Russian mobsters.

Two men held up Graff last month, making off with more than 40 million pounds ($65 million) in jewelry. The loot was in two bags, and the Mirror's sources said "Tim" has one of them.

"The gang have been betrayed by one of their own and the gang leader is furious," a source said. "He has told his crew to find this traitor at all costs. They think the guy is bound to be hiding abroad and fear he is biding his time to try to move on the jewelry and make millions."

The sources said the mastermind of the crime is angry because the Russian mob expects a cut and because he collects watches and had his eye on a diamond-encrusted Bulgari watch valued at close to $2 million.

Police said at least five men were involved in the heist.
