PARSIPPANY, N.J., Sept. 2 (UPI) -- A New Jersey woman who celebrates her 100th birthday in three weeks still puts in 40 hours as a secretary in her son's insurance agency.

Astrid Thoenig began working for the Thornton Agency in Parsippany in 1976 when she was already past retirement age.

"I'll keep doing it as long as I can function and do the job," she told The Star-Ledger of Newark. "I always enjoyed work. I never thought I'd be an old maid."

Thoenig works from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. five days a week, Her son, John Thornton, 67, said her shorthand is still perfect and her typing quick and accurate.

Her only difficulty is in walking. She uses a walker following a failed hip-replacement operation.

Thoenig is still in a tiny minority with only 1 percent of the U.S. workforce 75 or older. But older workers are also a growing minority with federal statistics showing dramatic growth between 1977 and 2007 both in workers 75 and older and in the number who work full time.
