CLERMONT, Fla., Aug. 27 (UPI) -- Authorities are investigating an incident in which a Florida dad took his son to school in a helicopter, saying he wanted to make an impression on students.
The Lake County Sheriff's office said Bart Sutherin did not alert authorities or the Lake County school district before renting a Hughes 300 helicopter and dropping his son off for the first day of classes Monday at East Ridge High School in Clermont. Sutherin put the copter down behind some portable classrooms on the school's east side, the Orlando (Fla.) Sentinel reported Thursday.
Sutherin, a father of three and a registered pilot, told investigators the stunt was an attempt to "make a positive impression on the other students" for his son Joseph, 14.
The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating the incident. An official said Sutherin is unlikely to face penalties because he landed the helicopter "in accordance with the Federal Aviation Regulations."
