Cross-country drive on 2 gallons of gas

MINGDEMEN, China, Aug. 12 (UPI) -- Residential property managers in China's Shaanxi Province smeared butter on gas pipelines as a deterrent to burglars, one manager said.
"Natural gas pipelines are often used as 'ladders' by burglars and burglaries are rife here," the manager of Mingdemen Community in Shaanxi's provincial capital, Xi'an, said.
China's state-run Xinhua news agency reported the managers bought 220 pounds of butter -- a relatively economical way to keep crooks' palms from otherwise becoming greased.
Of the 2,000 residences in the community, 1,200 are rental leases, and thus it is hard to determine who the residents are, the manager said. "Some bad guys may sneak in."
