Sleeping Swede ducks passing train
BORAS, Sweden, Aug. 10 (UPI) -- A man who fell asleep along a railroad track in Sweden probably awoke with a bad headache, which wasn't bad considering police say he was hit by a train.
Sven Persson of the Vastra Gotaland police told the Swedish news agency ITT the man suffered a slight gash on his head when clipped by a passing train early Sunday.
The unidentified man had apparently been drinking before he fell asleep on the tracks outside of Boras. He woke up just long enough to move his head out of the way.
"He had woken up when the train came, raised his head and hit it on a metal object on the train," Persson said. "Then he went back to sleep."
Indiana State Fair offers daring foods
INDIANAPOLIS, Aug. 10 (UPI) -- The Indiana State Fair offered some dishes this year that fairgoers said were unique to them -- barbequed beaver and turtle soup.
Kisha Marks, 34, of Indianapolis, said the Taste of the Wild Cookout -- which began nearly 20 years ago -- gave her a chance to try foods she likely never would have been exposed to in her urban lifestyle, The Indianapolis Star reported.
"Never in my wildest dreams did I expect to be eating this today," Marks said Saturday. "But I'm so glad they gave people like me who aren't outdoorsy an opportunity to try this and see what Indiana has to offer."
Brittany Marks, 10, decided the barbequed beaver was not for her.
"It was OK, but I wouldn't eat it again," Marks said.
"I try and like everything," said Randy Maier, 45, who is an old Taste of the Wild hand. "This has just become a tradition for us that we look forward to. We all like the food."
Seeing double at Twins Day fest
TWINSBURG, Ohio, Aug. 10 (UPI) -- People attending the Twins Day festival in Twinsburg, Ohio, say the annual gathering of sets of twins is a chance to have fun and see double.
Courtney Schmies, 18, of Parma Heights, Ohio, said attending Saturday's festival her and her twin sister Brittney an opportunity to compete for the festival title of Most Alike Females between the ages of 16 and 19, The (Cleveland) Plain Dealer reported.
"It's just fun to compete," Schmies said.
Sshmies and her sister won last year but failed to place this year.
Cayla Simmermon, who was on hand with her twin sister Mylee, said the festival offers a sense of family.
"It's like one big family reunion, all the twins you've met," she said.
Kendall Braun, who won with his twin brother Kevin in the category of least alike males above the age of 13, said the festival is one of a kind.
"Where else can you see double for a three-day weekend?" Braun told The Plain Dealer.
Resort offers $19 'Survivor' reservations
SAN DIEGO, Aug. 10 (UPI) -- A California resort says it is offering summer reservations starting at $19 a night for rooms with no beds, pillows, towels or toiletries.
San Diego's Rancho Bernardo Inn -- which features three pools, two restaurants, a golf course and a spa -- said the stripped-down "Survivor Package" rooms will come at steep discounts from the usual $219 room rate from Aug. 16 through Aug. 31, The San Diego Union-Tribune reported.
Resort officials said the standard $219 price lowers with each amenity guests are willing to go without, including $20 off for bringing sheets from home and a similar discount for not using the hotel's lights.
John Gates, Rancho Bernardo Inn's general manager, said the scheme is aimed at luring new customers to the resort.
"It's our belief once we get families here on a 'Survivor Package,' they'll come back on a non-'Survivor Package,'" he said. "It's our way of getting people here that might not normally come."
