ST. PETERSBURG, Fla., Aug. 7 (UPI) -- Residents of a St. Petersburg, Fla., neighborhood said three beloved gray Chinese geese that were taken away by a trapper have been returned to their home lake.

People living near Crescent Lake said the matriarch of the neighborhood geese, affectionately named Mama, and two unnamed geese were returned to the lake Thursday, five days after they were taken away by Austin Corley.

Corley, 19, earns money by trapping geese and ducks from lakes and selling them to restaurants and developers at auctions, the St. Petersburg Times reported Friday.

St. Petersburg police Officer Ray Merritt said he contacted Corley through his probation officer -- he is being monitored for drug possession charges -- and negotiated the return of the geese. He said Corley also was issued a trespass violation banning him from the area around the lake for two years.

"Sometimes, we get lucky and things work out in our favor," Merritt said.
