MANNHEIM, Germany, Aug. 2 (UPI) -- A German garbage collector will be reinstated after a court ruled he was unlawfully fired for taking a child's travel bed out of the trash, a judge said.

Judge Sima Maali-Faggin ruled the garbage man, identified as Mehmet G., should not have been dismissed without notice, even though he violated company policy on objects found in the garbage, Der Spiegel reported.

G., a 29-year-old father of two, worked for the company for nine years and was primarily responsible for sorting recycled paper. In December 2008, he took the child's bed out of the garbage while on the job.

He was fired without notice.

The court decision didn't focus on whether one can steal from garbage, just on whether G. should have asked permission to remove the bed.

He has not decided whether to return to work or look for a job somewhere else.

"After events like these," G.'s lawyer, Thomas Karl, said, "things are usually poisonous."
