PLEASANTON, Calif., July 24 (UPI) -- Authorities in California said a 3-year-old boy survived a drop from the third-floor window of a hotel by landing atop a hedge.

Police said the boy, who was visiting with his family from Kuwait, leaned against a window screen in his family's room at the Larkspur Landing hotel Thursday in Pleasanton and the screen popped out, the Contra Costa Times (Walnut Creek, Calif.) reported Friday.

Police said the screen fell 21 feet to a hedge below and the boy landed on top of the screen, absorbing some of the impact from his fall.

"He was lucky," Lt. Mike Elerick said. "He definitely had a guardian angel."

The boy was reported as in fair condition Thursday evening at Children's Hospital Oakland.
