EDMONTON, Alberta, July 21 (UPI) -- A Canadian man who admitted to a home burglary might have avoided jail time if he had crossed a street in Edmonton, Alberta, legally.

A two-year sentence for housebreaking and burglary was handed down earlier this month after Michael Larsh, 30, entered a guilty plea to burglary, the Edmonton Journal reported Tuesday.

When the officer approached him, he began running but was caught and arrested..

Larsh pleaded guilty in court July 10 and was sentenced immediately afterward, the newspaper said.
