GREELEY, Colo., July 20 (UPI) -- A Colorado farmer who was drafted into World War II just as he was going to get his high school diploma says he has finally obtained the sheepskin at age 84.
Takeshi Murata of Greeley, Colo., says he was awarded a diploma from the University of Northern Colorado in June, 66 years after Uncle Sam plucked him as he was about to graduate from Greeley's College High School, KUSA-TV, Denver, reported Monday.
He got the degree from UNC because Greeley College High, which no longer exists, was associated with the university when he went there in the 1940s, the report said. Murata said he was sent to Japan after the war, where he met and married his wife, and both returned to Colorado to raise crops and five children.
Asked what it meant to him finally to have his high school diploma, Murata exclaimed, "I'm going to take it and get me a job!"
