BRISTOL, England, July 15 (UPI) -- A British woman said she was shocked when the movie her boyfriend took her to turned out to be video of him dancing to a music video and proposing marriage.
Pete Simson, 26, told girlfriend Hannah McDonagh, 25, they were going to see a film called "35 Shots of Rum" for her birthday at Watershed Cinema in Bristol, England. But the movie that began once the curtains were drawn was instead footage of Simson lip-syncing to pop star Daniel Bedingfield's "If You're Not the One" while dancing around shirtless, The Sun reported Wednesday.
At the end of the five-minute film, Simson lowered himself to one knee and presented McDonagh with a ring.
"I was totally shocked. I had no idea what was going on," McDonagh said. "Everyone else in the cinema was in on it and they were all looking at me. They were all watching it like it was really ordinary.
"I didn't realize it was a proposal until near the end when Pete stood up and put his hand in his pocket. I thought it was a birthday message. It's amazing that he has put so much effort into it," she said.
Simson said he wanted to make the proposal special.
"I wanted to do something a bit different, because after all, you only propose once," he said.
The gambit paid off: McDonagh immediately said yes, and the couple plan to wed next August.
