Conn. pet trust fund bill signed into law
HARTFORD, Conn., July 8 (UPI) -- Connecticut Gov. M. Jodi Rell has signed a bill to allow residents to set up living trusts with their pets as the beneficiaries.
The law, which was sponsored by state Sen. Toni Boucher, R-Ridgefield, state Rep. Russ Morin, D-Wethersfield, and state Rep. John Hetherington, R-New Canaan and Wilton, requires the trust funds to be used solely for the care of the beneficiary pets and can be used to care for a pet before the death of its owner if the human is no longer able to care for the animal, The Connecticut Post reported Wednesday.
"(Creating a trust for pets) is a good thing to do, especially because many pets outlive their families," Boucher said.
Morin said he was unaware of pet trusts until the matter was brought to his attention by constituents. Connecticut is the 41st state to pass a pet trust law.
"If it helps people and makes them feel good, then it's really a good piece" of legislation, Morin said.
Police: Man arrived at dentist naked
STRATFORD, Conn., July 8 (UPI) -- Police in Connecticut said a man who showed up for a dental appointment in the nude has been charged with disorderly conduct and public indecency.
Investigators said Christopher Hoff, 41, arrived at Optimus Dental in Stratford completely naked and fled the building once the female receptionist began screaming, The Connecticut Post reported Wednesday.
Officers arrived on the scene and people on the street pointed them in the direction of the "naked guy," police said.
Police said they tracked Hoff to his home, where he answered to door and claimed to have been sleeping all day. However, they said the receptionist at the dentist's office identified him as the naked man.
"She recognized him immediately -- his eyes are very blue and he has a good tan," the police report of the incident states, the Post reported.
Hoff, who was charged with two counts of disorderly conduct and one count of public indecency, was also charged with failure to comply with fingerprinting when he refused to undergo the process while in custody, police said.
500 to perform 'Thriller' in Indiana
GARY, Ind., July 8 (UPI) -- Organizers of a planned Michael Jackson tribute in his hometown of Gary, Ind., said nearly 500 people are expected to perform his famous "Thriller" dance.
The memorial, planned for Friday at The Steel Yard stadium, is expected to draw nearly 500 dancers of all ages to re-enact the entirety of Jackson's 14-minute "Thriller" video from 1983, the Northwest Indiana Times reported Wednesday.
Pastor John Ponder of the Family Christian Center megachurch, which is supplying 400 choir members to sing "We Are the World" to close the memorial, said about 75 percent of the dancers set to perform "Thriller" at the event are church members.
"Our hearts are in this," Ponder said. "We believe (Jackson) was a saved man. In his life he served to encourage others in their careers. He comes out of Northwest Indiana, and that's something we need to celebrate."
Jackson collapsed and died June 25 in Los Angeles.
New York seeks $133 million lotto winner
NEW YORK, July 8 (UPI) -- New York lottery officials said they are seeking the holder of a Mega Millions ticket worth $133 million that was purchased in New York's Queens borough.
Patel Dilip, 35, an employee at the Shiv Convenience Store in Queens, said lottery officials informed him that the winning ticket was purchased at his store, but the ticket holder has yet to come forward and claim the prize, the New York Daily News reported Wednesday.
"No one has come to make a claim yet," said Patel Dilip, 35, who works at the Shiv Convenience Store on Hillside Ave. "As far as I know it was a woman and she is really lucky."
Lottery officials said the ticket was the only one purchased to match all six numbers in Tuesday's drawing -- 25, 27, 35, 38, 39 and Mega ball number 28. They said the purchaser allowed the numbers to be selected at random by the computer and chose the lump sum option, which will mean an $82.7 million payment to the winner before taxes.
