Subscribe | UPI Odd Newsletter Subscribe YUMA, Ariz., July 8 (UPI) -- A 9-foot boa constrictor that startled a Yuma, Ariz., family when it turned up on the porch remains unclaimed in a local animal shelter. The Humane Society of Yuma told the Yuma Sun the boa will be donated to a zoo or sent to a rescue organization if the owner does not come forward. While individuals have offered to take the snake, the organization says a big reptile cannot be put up for adoption like a dog or cat. Advertisement Firefighters and the Humane Society captured the snake Saturday. It is being housed in a separate room from other animals at the shelter. Shanen Aranmour of the Humane Society said the snake had to be a pet imported to the area. Anyone claiming the boa will have to show proof of ownership and pay a $25 impound fee and $10 a day for its care. Officials say the boa was in good condition and apparently fed recently. David Williams, the Yuma animal control officer, said larger snakes have an additional incentive to escape, going in search of larger prey. "They're escape artists," he said. "Their terrarium lids have to be locked down." Advertisement
