'Jaws of Life' free boy, 2, from fence

NEW YORK, July 2 (UPI) -- Firefighters in New York said they used the "Jaws of Life" to free a 2-year-old boy whose head had become stuck in a metal fence at a public park.

Toddler Leon Stanley's father said the boy put his head through the bars of the fence at Mother Cabrini Park and became stuck when he tried to stand up without realizing the bars narrowed near the top, the New York Daily News reported Thursday.

"It all happened so fast," the boy's father said. "We were just walking in the park, and the next thing you know, there he was, crying, his head stuck."

Firefighter Michael Troiano said he and the rest of the Engine 202 crew used the Jaws of Life to pry the metal bars apart and free the toddler.

"Oh, he was glad to be out of there," Troiano said. "He ran to dad and was happy."

Leon's father said paramedics gave the toddler a clean bill of health after his ordeal.

"He's a little traumatized, but hopefully he'll forget about it soon," he said. "It's one of those things you'll look back on and laugh when he's all grown up."
