ARE, Sweden, May 6 (UPI) -- A Swedish couple are appealing a ruling that barred them from naming their son "Q" to the country's Supreme Administrative Court.

The court agreed on April 21 to hear the case, which centers around whether a single-letter first name is allowable under Sweden's 1982 names law, The Local reported Wednesday.

The couple who live in the northern city of Are said they have used the name "Q" since the boy's birth.

"He is quite simply Q with half of the inhabitants of the Are area. There are stranger names in the valley," the couple's appeal states.

The couple said in court documents that they would be willing to consider "Q:u" as an alternative.
