SALEM, Ore., May 6 (UPI) -- An Oregon state lawmaker said he has authored a resolution that would replace "Oregon, My Oregon" with a more modern official state song.

State Rep. Gene Whisnant, R-Sunriver, said House Joint Resolution 25 would help the state "be modern" by making "Oregon, My Oregon" the state anthem and reserving the state song position for "No Place Under the Sun Like Oregon," which was written in the 1970s by country singer Lindy Gravelle, The (Portland) Oregonian reported Wednesday.

House Rules Committee chairman Rep. Arnie Roblan, D-Coos Bay, scheduled a meeting on the issue for Wednesday afternoon.

Some members of the state legislature said they are hesitant to demote "Oregon, My Oregon," which has been the official state song since 1927.

"It's not something you hum in the shower, but it's our song," said state Sen. Betsy Johnson, D-Scappoose.
