1,400 mistakenly given detention

GREECE, N.Y., May 5 (UPI) -- Administrators with a New York state high school said more than 1,400 students were mistakenly informed of detention sentences by voice mail.

Officials at Greece Arcadia High School said automated messages were sent to the home phones of all the school's students Monday reminding them of Tuesday detentions that they were never meant to serve, the Rochester (N.Y.) Democrat and Chronicle reported.

"Recent changes to the (voice mail delivery) system may have prompted the error," Greece school district spokeswoman Laurel Heiden said.

Heiden said a second message was sent at about 9 p.m. Monday informing students and parents that the first message had been erroneous.

"That (earlier) message was sent to you in error. Your child does not have detention on Tuesday," the message said.
