Woman stuck in mud while chasing bird

CORTLANDT, N.Y., April 28 (UPI) -- Police in New York state said a woman who became stuck up to her waist in mud while chasing her pet cockatoo managed to dig herself out.

New York State Police said the 55-year-old Cortlandt woman chased her pet bird when it flew from her home and headed toward the woods just after 1 p.m. Monday, The (White Plains, N.Y.) Journal News reported Tuesday.

"The bird escaped from the residence and she went into the woods to pick the bird back up," said state Trooper John Bode. "She wound up getting stuck in the mud."

Police said a neighbor dialed 911 to report the woman was stuck in the mud about 150 yards into the woods, but the woman managed to free herself before police and Lake Mohegan firefighters arrived on the scene.

The cockatoo managed to escape but the woman was not injured, police said.

"She thanked everyone for their help and she said, basically, that this will never happen again," Bode said.
