Do they do Downward-Facing Dog?

MADISON, Wis., April 27 (UPI) -- The founder of a specialized day-care center in Madison, Wis., says her yoga classes for dogs at the site have been a surprise success.

Ruffin' It Resort owner Renee Brantner Shanesy said the so-called doga classes offered at the hotel and day-care center for dogs have resulted in a waiting list for those wanting their canines to get some stress relief, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported.

"It was just kind of a trial-and-error thing -- let's see how it is in the Madison market. But it's been nuts," Shanesy said.

The doga classes, which feature eight dogs and their owners, offer stress relief for human and canine participants alike, instructor Courtney Weis said.

"Dogs take cues from us. If you're stressed out, they are," Weis said. "Dogs live in the moment, which is what humans are striving for in yoga."

Jody Ekern, who brought her Jack Russell/cairn terrier mix to the class, said the class did seem to calm her dog, Count Chester.

"He was so excited when he came in," Ekern told the Journal Sentinel. "I was surprised at how much he calmed down."

Student has perfect score times 3

CANTON, Mich., April 27 (UPI) -- A Michigan high school student who got perfect scores on three college entrance tests may have the math skills to calculate the odds of doing what she did.

Suffice it to say that very few students achieve what Willa Chen, 17, a Canton High School senior in Canton, Mich., did.

The College Board says about one student in 5,000 taking the SAT gets a perfect score of 2,400, while the odds are a little better, one in 1,000, on the PSAT, The Detroit News reported. The other major college entrance test, the ACT, which comes from a competing organization, says the odds of a perfect finish are one in 14,000.

Karen Ludema, Chen's calculus teacher, calls her student "gracious and humble."

"I wouldn't say I studied a lot," Chen said. "I feel like you have to keep learning throughout your whole school career. When I was little, if you asked me how to describe myself, something like 'smart' wouldn't usually occur to me."

Chen, who has a 4.33 GPA, plans to attend Princeton University in the fall.

B.C. solicitor-general's license suspended

VICTORIA, British Columbia, April 27 (UPI) -- A Canadian provincial official whose responsibilities include oversight of the British Columbia motor vehicles office has had his driver's license suspended.

John van Dongen is the solicitor-general for British Columbia. He said he has had two speeding tickets in the past two years, enough to trigger a suspension, especially given his history of fast driving, The Province reported.

He said the suspension was a surprise but he accepts responsibility for his actions.

"I am not proud of my driving record," he added.

British Columbia Premier Gordon Campbell has reassigned responsibility for the Insurance Corp. of British Columbia and the Office of the Superintendent of Motor Vehicles to another member of the cabinet.

From fired to fire, bad day for Oregon man

OREGON CITY, Ore., April 27 (UPI) -- An Oregon man who had just been told he was out of a job and came home to find his house burning, says he "chooses to laugh" at his run of bad luck.

Victor Gonzalez of Oregon City told KPTV the fire may have started with a spark from his wood stove. He had expected to be at home but got called to work Friday -- after he lit the fire -- and then found out he was being fired.

Gonzalez is a social worker helping people handle emergencies like fires or being fired.

"You can choose to laugh or you can choose to cry and I'm choosing to laugh because I don't want to know what's going to happen if I cry," he said.

Gonzalez, a single father since a divorce, said he is grateful to his 12-year-old daughter who helped him get his other daughter and a niece out of the burning house.

The fire, which apparently started in the chimney, destroyed part of the roof and singed the top floor. The house and Gonzalez's possessions are soaked with water.
