VIRGINIA BEACH, Va., April 22 (UPI) -- Organizers say they are hoping for a record crowd at an organic Earth Day happy hour along Chesapeake Bay.

Wednesday evening's "Green Drinks" event is being put together by environmentalists and restaurant owners from all four states that border the Chesapeake and will feature organic beers and wines served at various bars and restaurants.

The (Norfolk) Virginian-Pilot said Green Drinks has become a worldwide phenomenon since it began in London in 1989. The current attendance record of 1,800 was set last year in Melbourne, Australia.

The events are designed to draw environmentally conscious people together to discuss their common interests, network and generally get to know one another. The setting is low key and is not meant to become a lecture hall, the newspaper said.

"The events have much more energy than traditional networking events," said Randy Gilliland, a Hampton city councilman who helped organize a Green Drinks chapter in his city. "While all are interested and passionate about green/environmental issues, there is no group think."
