U.S. parachutists set record

ZEPHYRHILLS, Fla., April 15 (UPI) -- Two Air Force officers finished 103 tandem skydives in 24 hours Wednesday in Florida to earn a Guinness world record, witnesses said.

Lt. Cols. Chip Bowlin and Kristin Gould of MacDill Air Force Base achieved the feat to help raise money for the Special Operations Warrior Foundation, the Fox News affiliate TV station in Tampa, Fla., reported.

Their fasted cycle was 5 1/2 minutes from take-off to landing, they said.

"First of all everyone knows we're crazy," Gould said. "We have talked for a long time about our love of parachuting."

Gould and Bowlin said they are the first to set the record.

Police: Woman kept robber as sex slave

KALUGA, Russia, April 15 (UPI) -- Russian police said a female hairdresser was arrested for allegedly keeping an unsuccessful armed robber bound as a sex slave for two days.

Web site Life.ru quoted police as saying the 32-year-old man entered the hair salon at about 5 p.m. March 14, brandished a gun and demanded money from workers and customers, The Moscow Times reported Wednesday.

However, the 28-year-old hairdresser, who had martial arts training, disarmed the man and bound him hair-dryer cord.

Police told Life.ru that the woman then allegedly kept the man gagged and handcuffed to a radiator for 48 hours. She is accused of forcing him to take Viagra and forcing him to have sex with her multiple times.

The woman let her prisoner go March 16 and he went to police after seeking treatment for injuries to his genitals.

The Web site said the man filed a complaint asking for the hairdresser to be brought up on charges for "actions of a sexual nature." The woman filed a complaint the next day seeking armed robbery charges against the man.

"I don't know what's going to happen now," Life.ru quoted a police source as saying. "We could put both of them behind bars: him for robbery, her for rape and assault."

Officials: Potholes control speeding

NAVESTOCK, England, April 15 (UPI) -- Village officials in Navestock, England, said they are refusing to repair potholes as a cost-cutting measure and as a method of preventing people from speeding.

The Navestock Parish Council said in an article delivered to residents that people should "stop complaining about the verges and potholes" because the road flaws "cost a lot to repair," The Daily Mail reported Wednesday.

"Coupled with potholes there is an ongoing cry for speed limits. Well, potholes are the original traffic calming measure," the article states. "So what with saving much time, rates and calming the traffic, potholes seem quite friendly."

The announcement was met with outrage from many residents.

"It beggars belief that the people who are supposed to be acting on behalf of the parishioners think it a good idea to put people at risk, particularly the elderly, cyclists, motorcyclists and horse riders by coming up with such a totally crackpot idea," said Roy Tyzack, head of the Navestock village society and a former Metropolitan Police officer.

"We have a great deal of potholes and since the snow and frost, the situation has got even worse. I know from my time in the police how serious a problem they can be," he said. "They cause accidents, damage to vehicles -- even at slow speeds -- personal injury to pedestrians, particularly at night in our unlit lanes, and the consequences of one of our many young horse riders falling foul of a pothole does not bear thinking about."

Man dressed as Che Guevara for court

CONSETT, England, April 15 (UPI) -- A British book dealer accused of stealing a Shakespeare first edition arrived in court dressed as Argentine Marxist revolutionary Che Guevara.

Raymond Scott, 52, faces six charges of theft and handling stolen goods after he allegedly stole the 1623 collection of William Shakespeare's works, valued at $4.5 million, from Durham University, The Sun reported Wednesday.

He arrived in Consett Magistrates' Court with three women and a bodyguard who were also dressed as revolutionaries.

The Sun said Scott previously showed up for a court date dressed as Boss Hogg from popular TV show "Dukes of Hazzard."
