Missing dog found across country

MIRAMAR, Fla., April 10 (UPI) -- A Florida woman said her Jack Russell terrier, which disappeared from her home three years ago, was found more than 1,000 miles away in Louisiana.

Barbara Apostolo said her dog, ToBoi, escaped from her Miramar, Fla., home three years ago and she had no clue as to the dog's fate until two weeks ago when she was contacted by a Louisiana animal shelter, WPLG-TV, Miami, reported.

Apostolo said shelter employees found her contact information on the dog's microchip. She said she doesn't know how the dog made the trek across the country.

ToBoi arrived Wednesday at Florida's Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport and was reunited with its owner.

"She reminds me of three years ago, how things were when I first got her there," Apostolo said.

Teen busted twice for drugs in one hour

KALAMAZOO, Mich., April 10 (UPI) -- Police in Michigan said they arrested a 17-year-old suspect for marijuana possession twice within the space of a single hour.

The Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety said the suspect was first arrested at about 1:30 p.m. Wednesday when officers spotted the teenager rolling a joint, WWMT-TV, Kalamazoo, reported. Officers said they discovered additional marijuana the suspect had hidden beneath a nearby vehicle and he was arrested and charged with possession of the drug.

The teenager was released after posting $100 bail.

However, the department said officers spotted the same suspect rolling a joint at 2:20 p.m. -- les than an hour later. Officers said they also discovered the suspect to be carrying crack cocaine.

The teenager was booked into the Kalamazoo County Jail on charges of possessing cocaine and marijuana as well as violating his bond conditions.

Thief targeting Atlanta storm grates

ATLANTA, April 10 (UPI) -- Georgia authorities said a thief has stolen about 100 storm grates -- each weighing 200 pounds -- from Atlanta expressways to sell as scrap metal.

The Georgia Department of Transportation said the perpetrator first started taking the cast-iron storm grates in October and would commonly leave a piece of cardboard or plywood over the open hole, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported.

"We think he did that to disguise the fact the grate was stolen, not because he was worried about somebody falling in the hole," said William Green, lead investigator on the case for the transportation department.

Officials said the man would not get much money selling the grate covers as scrap metal.

"All I can say is, times must be tough," said Georgia Department of Transportation spokesman Mark McKinnon, "to steal something that weighs that much that is worth about eight dollars."

Pole faces jail for stealing toilet paper

WARSAW, Poland, April 10 (UPI) -- Polish police arrested a 26-year-old man for allegedly stealing a toilet paper roll from a Warsaw restaurant, a crime that could cost him 10 years in jail.

The man, identified only as Edvin L., is accused of stealing the paper roll worth 66 cents but, in the process, breaking the box holding the roll, bringing the total damage $105, the Polish daily Dziennik said. Police were called by a restaurant manager who spotted the man hiding something under his jacket.

The daily said the man's theft was published on the Warsaw police Web site as one of their successful actions since January. A woman in Warsaw police headquarters told the newspaper it was a serious crime.
