WAUPUN , Wis., March 31 (UPI) -- A Wisconsin high school has altered its school song to remove gender-specific references and apply the song to sports other than football.
Waupun High School Principal Jeff Finstad said he realized there was a problem with the song when he printed out the lyrics for a group of students who wanted to paint them on a gym wall, The Reporter newspaper in Fon du Lac, Wis., said.
The song urged "fellows" to fight and made specific references only to the sport of football, the principal said.
"I'm not putting those words on the wall," Finstad said.
Instead, he recruited junior Bridget Nickel to rework the song so it could be applicable to all of the school's students and the sports they play.
"It just kind of came to me. The beat of the song is to 'On Wisconsin,' so it wasn't too hard," Nickel told The Reporter.
The new song received the approval of Finstad and other school officials at a recent school board meeting, the newspaper said.
"The words came out pretty good and they are appropriate," Finstad said.
The principal said the new lyrics will be painted on the gymnasium wall.
