CHESTERFIELD, Mo., March 26 (UPI) -- Some residents of Chesterfield, Mo., say they should be able to keep chickens in their homes' backyards despite a new city ordinance.
Chesterfield resident Marci Davis said a city ordinance that forbids individuals with less than 2 acres of property from owning chickens is unfair to residents with limited room, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch said Wednesday.
"It didn't make sense to me," she said of the ordinance passed this year.
City Councilman Barry Flachsbart agrees such an ordinance was unnecessary, despite claims by the Clarkson Woods South subdivision that home poultry efforts can lure in wildlife while declining property values.
The Post-Dispatch said those area residents keeping chickens in Chesterfield homes argue that the birds help limit the number of bugs and weeds at those houses, while offering fresh eggs and droppings that can be used as high-grade fertilizer.
