Jailed woman gets married in court

DULUTH, Minn., March 4 (UPI) -- A jailed woman married her beloved in a Minnesota courtroom moments after the judge ordered her held without bail while awaiting extradition to Arkansas.

Shannah Miller, 38, waived her right to fight extradition to Arkansas on three felony counts of fraudulently using a credit or debit card in a St. Louis County District courtroom in Duluth, Minn., and was joined in the dock by her boyfriend, Matthew Gothard, 35, after the judge ordered her held without bail, the Duluth News Tribune reported Wednesday.

Judge David Johnson left the bench, approached the couple and performed a brief marriage ceremony for the pair, who were allowed to hold hands and kiss at the ceremony but were split when Miller was taken back to the courthouse's secure holding area.

Gothard said he and Miller met about a year ago and had been discussing the possibility of marriage for a couple of months before her arrest.

"I wish we could have gotten married under better circumstances," he said after the ceremony. "It's not what we expected. No honeymoon."
