Subscribe | UPI Odd Newsletter Subscribe NARRAGANSETT , R.I., Feb. 24 (UPI) -- Authorities said a would-be robber fled from a Rhode Island store after a clerk grabbed the toy gun from his hand and broke the fake weapon in half. Police Detective Scott Vellone said the alleged robber entered the Cumberland Farms convenience store in Narragansett on Feb. 12 and drew his plastic weapon after other customers had left, the Providence (R.I.) Journal reported Tuesday. Advertisement However, the clerk did not believe the gun was real, so he grabbed it and the plastic pellet gun broke in half, police said. The suspect, described as a man between 17 and 19 years old who was wearing a black bandana over his nose and mouth, fled the store on foot. Vellone cautioned against using the clerk's actions as an example. "Given a situation like that, I would not make the recommendation to take matters into their own hands. If it had been a real gun, we could have tragic results," he said.
