OGDEN, Utah, Feb. 2 (UPI) -- A Utah man determined to restore a historic beer billboard on his building says he has prevailed after a 10-year legal struggle with the city of Ogden.

A regime change on Ogden's historical landmarks commission has finally enabled Bruce Edwards to restore a 1910 billboard painted onto the side of his vacant two-story brick structure, The Salt Lake Tribune reported Monday. Still slightly visible, the sign reads, "Every hour upon the hour for about an hour Drink Becker's Beer -- Ogden's Famous Beer."

After being turned down by the commission in 1994, Edwards took the city to court on free speech grounds, enlisting the aid of the American Civil Liberties Union. In 2005, U.S. District Court Judge Parley Baldwin ruled in favor of Edwards, saying Ogden had usurped his First Amendment rights.

The landmarks commission, now with almost entirely different membership, Monday reversed the original 1994 decision, allowing Edwards to restore the sign.

"I outlasted 'em," Edwards chortled to the Tribune. "And the bottom line is, I was right."
