Labrador top dog in United States

NEW YORK, Jan. 21 (UPI) -- The New York-based American Kennel Club said 2008 registration statistics suggest the Labrador retriever is the most popular dog in the country.

The AKC said more than twice as many Labradors were registered in 2008 than any other individual breed, giving the breed the top dog spot for the 18th consecutive year.

Meanwhile, the club said Bulldogs appear to be growing in popularity, breaking into the top 10 for the first time in more than seven decades at No. 8.

"The playful Lab may still reign supreme, but the docile and adaptive nature of the Bulldog is gaining ground as a family favorite," AKC spokeswoman Lisa Peterson said. "It's no surprise to learn that this devoted family companion is still growing in popularity."

Yorkshire terriers were ranked second most popular by the AKC, with German shepherds, golden retrievers, beagles, boxers, dachshunds, poodles and shih tzus also ranking in the top 10.
