Researchers: Delaying sex sound strategy

LONDON, Jan. 18 (UPI) -- Women who play hard to get increase their chance of finding a reliable partner, a British researcher says.

Robert Seymour of University College London used a mathematical model to determine that reliable men are more likely to be willing to wait for sex, The Daily Telegraph reported. Cads, on the other hand, are likely to drift away.

He acknowledged that his findings, published in the Journal of Theoretical Biology, match with what women -- and their mothers -- have known for generations.

"Long courtship is a price paid for increasing the chance that mating, if it occurs, will be a harmonious match which benefits both sexes," he said. "This may help to explain the commonly held belief that a woman is best advised not to sleep with a man on a first date."

Dr. Peter Sozou of Warwick Medical School and the London School of Economics warned that delaying sex is not a foolproof strategy. He said some irresponsible men may actually stick around.

"She cannot eliminate this risk completely unless she decides never to mate," he said.
