BANGKOK, Jan. 16 (UPI) -- Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva was met Friday at the country's Teacher's Council by protesters performing a cursing ritual.

About a dozen members of the Sanam Luang Democracy Group, an apparent splinter group of the United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship, roasted chilis and salt outside of the council's headquarters Friday, MCOT.net reported Friday.

The protesters said they chose to perform the cursing ritual instead of throwing eggs at Abhisit because they feared the action could drive up food prices.

The prime minister was surrounded by security guards when he entered and exited the building, MCOT said.
