Woman gives birth to unexpected baby

BARNSTAPLE, England, Dec. 23 (UPI) -- A British woman said she did not know she was pregnant before she went into a hospital with stomach pains and discovered she was in labor.

Tina Cook, 31, said her partner, Peter Hearn, rushed her to North Devon District Hospital after she woke up in the early hours of Saturday with stomach cramps, The Daily Mail reported Tuesday.

Cook said she has two previous children -- Amy, 9, and Ruben, 5 -- but the experiences did not prepare her for giving birth to 5-pound, 8-ounce Alfie, a child she did not realize she was carrying.

"I am just so shocked. I had no idea I was pregnant," she said after Alfie's birth Saturday. "My period finished three days ago and it didn't click until I got to the hospital and I felt the head.

"I've read about things like this but never quite believed it as I know what it is like to be pregnant," she said. "The other pregnancies I knew about. I felt all the kicking, everything was normal but I didn't feel this one at all. We are totally unprepared."

"It is all still sinking in, but it is the most amazing Christmas present and although we were not planning a third child, we are overjoyed," Cook said.
